30 Posts in 30 Days #15: The case of the missing library comic strip

Yesterday I read a #420 of the Shelf Check comic. I bookmarked it wanting to pass it along once I got to the office this morning and when I went to do just that I got a “page not found”. A few quick searches and it looks like there’s a bunch more broken links on the net today. The more interesting part is that in my feed reader this morning there’s a new version of comic #420 on a completely different topic. Hmmm. I was able to find a cached version of the original with my mad search skilz (no, it doesn’t seem to be in the Google Search cache,) but for now I won’t post it because for all I know there’s a really  good reason she took it down. I have left a comment on the blog asking what happened and I’ll let you know if I get a response.

However, the larger issue is one that keeps happening over and over again on the net: What? I didn’t post that! It’s not there. You can’t see it. I didn’t say it. Trouble is, once it’s on the Internet it ain’t ever goin’ away.

Look, I’ve regretted posting things on this blog in the past and I’ve mostly resisted the temptation to take things down and pretend that they never existed. However, should you decide to actually do that, for good reason or bad, be honest and at least admit that you’ve done it. I’d prefer you explain yourself, but even if you don’t want to, let people know you’ve done it. Otherwise, pretending it didn’t happen will do more to harm your reputation than being open about it.
