But consider the actual sign being criticized. Why is the library asking for your phone number just to use a computer? What possible legitimate purpose is that serving?

Why else?
1. To call you when you’re asleep to tell you the computer is now available for your use
2. To txt you while you’re on the computer so you’ll stop looking at that picture
3. So the FBI can call you to make an appointment to arrest you for downloading and ripping that CC attribution song
4. Because the sign maker “just doesn’t get it”
I could go on with the satire, but really — Why?!
i know old post, but I like what they do at the Estes Park Public Library: You sign up under a name that you enter on a computer, can be any name. That screen tells you when one is ready. They don’t care who you are. They just want you to get a computer to use.
