Carlos Gimenez, Miami-Dade Mayor: ‘The Age Of The Library Is Probably Ending’

Library PollThe news that Miami-Dade Mayor was axing funding for a no-kill program at county animal shelters got worse on Monday when he announced that nearly two dozen local library branches would also be shuttered to avoid a tax increase.

The deep cuts, if passed, mean closing 22 libraries and laying off 251 library employees.

But that’s no big deal, Gimenez conveyed in an interview with Local 10 Wednesday. “People have said that the age of the library is probably ending,” he said.

Well, I don’t mean this as a knock on him personally, but given his past as a (by all accounts, excellent) firefighter, maybe he’s not taken a great deal of time to think through the question itself. I certainly hope that’s not his opinion. Besides, it’s a pretty tepid opinion if it is one at all: “People have said…” and “probably ending.” So not only will he not take specific credit for the thought, but he doesn’t want to commit, either.
    I can only hope other city officials across America don’t feel the same way.
