At the end of Yonge St
I grew up in Rochester, NY. The joke is that Toronto is 70 miles away but it takes 3.5 hours to get there. (Look at a map if you don’t get it.) Whenever I did get up to Toronto one of my favorite streets to hang out on was Yonge St. Vimeo user Fixinmytie has posted this amazing stop-motion video of him and a friend traveling from one end of Yonge St to the other. The trip took 14 hours but this video takes just a little more than three minutes.

Using a 1964 modem to dial up to the Internet
In the late 80s I used a 300-baud acoustic modem connected to my Atari 800 to connect to BBSes. Ah, the memories. (Though I think it would have been cooler if he had actually used a rotary dial phone to make it true “dial up”.)

K-9 Trailer
Keep in mind these two important points: First, the voice of K-9 in this trailer is not the one that will be used in the final show. (Though don’t expect it to be John Leeson either.) Second, this is a show for kids. Enjoy!

Imagining a Smithsonian Commons
I’m back from Computers in Libraries 2009 and I’ve got a lot to share. The first is Wednesday’s keynote talk from Michael Edson, Director of Web and New Media Strategy at the Smithsonian Institution. It was streamed live online (a first for CIL) and was recorded. Listen to him and then go read all the books he mentions in his talk. (I’ve read all but one of them and I’m on the list at LCL for it now.)
He also put up a text version of his presentation in SlideShare. I've embedded it here for you.

Barriers to Innovation and Inclusion
NASA formed a committee to look at how things were done in their organization. Instead of writing a report no one would read, they created a video and posted it on YouTube. I can say that MPOW has its moments but it’s not this bad. Watch this video and ask yourself, have I ever been told, or worse, said any of these phrases?

Amazing online film archive
The National Film Board of Canada has a “new online Screening Room. Here you can watch full-length films, clips and trailers - all free for home viewing.” The site currently contains hundreds of videos from the past 90 years from animated shorts to full-length documentaries. Videos are available in low, medium, and high quality, shareable to several different online social networks and are embeddable. Here’s Between the Laughter, a “This feature-length documentary looks at Stephen O'Keefe, a deaf, stand-up comedian. Faced with the usual challenges that life presents.”

Word clouds in motion
A video of Nina Simone’s Feeling Good reminded me a a few other of my favorite videos of this type all embedded below. (The third one contains some adult language.) I like to think of these as word clouds in motion; the use of motion in combination with typography to visualize something aural. Enjoy!
With a little additional searching I found that this animation style is actually called kenetic typography and there are plenty more examples on YouTube. That works too ;-)Labels: animation, typography, video, youtube
